Located on the road to Mijas Pueblo from Fuengirola, just past the toll roundabout on the right, the Lew Hoad Tennis and Paddle Club is one of the most picturesque and idyllic places to play tennis in southern Spain.
Originally opened by Lew Hoad, a famous Australian tennis player in the 50’s and 60’s who won Wimbledon, the US Open and the Australian Open, the tennis club of the same name enjoys a stunning location overlooking the Fuengirola coastline.
Since 2005, the Club has been under new management who have managed to retain its original charm while refurbishing and expanding the sports facilities.
Personalities and celebrities from all walks of life have visited and played at the Club, including actor, Sean Connery, singer, Frank Sinatra and tennis stars such as Peter McNamara and Stan Smith.
Mijas properties close to Lew Hoad’s are popular with tennis fans and sun seekers alike who want to benefit from all the Costa del Sol has to offer while being far enough away to enjoy the peace and quiet of the Andalucian hills.
Just 20 minutes from Malaga and 25 minutes from Marbella, the Lew Hoad Tennis and Paddle Club is based around an old Andaluz Cortijo, farmhouse, a swimming pool with tropical gardens and ponds. The tennis courts are surrounded by high hedges.
The restaurant caters for 110 people, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. Special parties, celebrations and weddings are held regularly beside the swimming pool and an indoor lounge and fireplace are popular during the winter.
Choose from six artificial turf paddle courts, seven tennis courts, book lessons, join in with mix-ins, tournaments or groups to make the most of the Lew Hoad Tennis and Paddle Club.
A gym is equipped with cardio machines and a bodybuilding area. Throughout the year, additional classes are held, including: Spinning, Yoga and Pilates.
In his 1979 autobiography, Jack Kramer, the long-time tennis promoter and great player himself, ranked Lew Hoad as one of the 21 best players of all time. For five straight years, beginning in 1952, he was ranked in the world top 10 for amateurs, reaching the World No. 1 spot in 1956. Hoad was a member of the Australian team that between 1952 and 1956 won the Davis Cup four times. He turned professional in July 1957.
The Lew Hoad Tennis and Paddle Club is situated just 4.5 km south of Mijas Pueblo and 3.5km north of Fuengirola.
This is a perfect location to buy or rent a property with easy access to the village and the coast. The toll road, situated just metres away from the Club entrance allows access to the rest of the coast, including the coastal towns of Marbella to the west and Malaga to the east.
The beautiful gardens combined with top-class sporting facilities and an excellent restaurant at Lew Hoad’s make this one of southern Spain’s most attractive sporting clubs of its kind between Gibraltar and Malaga.
