Fuengirola has been a popular seaside tourist destination on Spain’s Costa del Sol since the 1960’s and continues to attract visitors from all over the world.
The sea front promenade is over 9km long and is lined with bars, cafés and restaurants overlooking the sea. One of the most famous dining areas in town is ´Fish Alley´ which offers a wide choice of international restaurants offering everything from gourmet Spanish cuisine to British pub grub.
The promenade at the west side of town starts just below Sohail Castle, where several events each year are held. The Fuengirola River Park has a choice of amazing facilities, including a 140 metre zip line, pedalos, a bouncy castle, bicycle hire and paddle surf and kayak hire.
At 18 metres high, the zip line is not for the faint-hearted and crosses the Fuengirola River from the base of Sohail Castle.
Fuengirola offers visitors a wide range of attractions, including sandy beaches with sun beds and parasols, colourful street markets and Bioparc, a zoo which recreates the natural environments of the animals who live there.
A play park and miniature farm for small kids are also popular and Bioparc is just a 5 mintue walk from the bus and train stations.
Several companies in the port area offer a range of water sports, pleasure trips, boat charters and fishing trips. Sould Park opened in February, 2015 and offers 15 rides for smaller children to enjoy. Free access cards can be topped up with as much or as little as you require to enjoy the rides.
Shopaholics are well catered for with a choice of individually-run boutiques, department stores and gift shops dotted around town. Miramar Shopping Centre is within 1km of Fuengirola centre and offers a vast choice of shops, supermarkets and a 16 screen cinema which also shows films in English.
The Parque Aquatico Mijas is situated on the outskirts of town and is a popular family attraction, with a wide choice of adrenalin-pumping rides, slides and chutes to suit all ages. Attractions include the Kamikaze Water Slide, Adventure River, Blue Lake and Lizard Island, which is a great place for the younger kids to play.
Fuengirola International Fair (better known as Feria de los Pueblos) is a colourful, gastronomic extravaganza, held each year for five days at the end of April. Visitors can enjoy live music, dancing, drinking and eating until the small hours of the morning.
This colourful event takes place in Fuengirola fairground, towards Los Boliches. Over 50 countries are represented, offering typical gourmet delights and cultural events including German oompah bands, Japanese sushi, Cuban salsa dancing and a vast range of cuisine, drinks and entertainment.
If you are planning a visit to the Fuengirola International Festival, weekends are particularly busy, so to avoid the crowds, try to get there on the Thursday or Monday of the event.
Fuengirola Feria (Feria del Rosario) takes place each year between 6 and 12 October and involves stunning horse processions, fairground rides, stalls, traditional costumes and carriages. Not to be missed if you are in Fuengirola during October.
